Ability re-gained through art

Learning to create can be daunting it can be overwhelming and frightening. We worry who will see it what will they think about it? Why should I even bother? So I thought I would document my journey with disability lost skills and starting again, a new way, whilst I learn art skills at TAFE. A part time course in visual arts. I’m starting at a cert 111 level to gain confidence and grown in strength and skills on the way. I have the support of the disability student support services and counsellor my teacher is also very supportive. And I thank them for that it helps me move through the course more confidently with more ability.

I’ve been teaching out in the western areas for a long time and bringing the gift of art through individual self expression is a good tool for people to use when they get bored, lonely or just want something uplifting or positive to do.

I was pretty much self taught and after studying and working in areas of art therapy, environmental sciences and photography as well as the health services industry I leveraged these to become an artist and create my own way to help others learn art, their own style and to not fear or worry about how when why they create. Sometimes it’s a personal story and others it is to share. Both are valuable.

There aren’t art school in most remote rural and regional areas, and it has been a dream of mine for a long time to be able to go to a art college to learn more skills, retrain and then share back with the community. I also want to create further exhbitions for my own art and that’s something I am looking forward to.

So after many years here I am back at Art school this is a piece from my first semester learning to cast hands in clay and creating something morphing out of them. It’s called Take. Flight 2024, Keryn Hyslop

By the way with multiple disabilities now I have to learn how to do what I am able to and not what I used to beable to. When I let go and let this new art style flow it happens easily and I am suprised by the outcomes, always something to reflect and learn, to acknowledge through the process. So if you can’t do art or other things the way you used to maybe try and do it how you are able to.

Enjoy I will share my progress with you on the way. Thanks for reading.
