Belonging

Belonging is a small mixed media artwork featuring two Australian spoonbills standing together beneath a tuckeroo tree beside the water.

The work was inspired by the familiar foreshore landscape of the Wynnum-Manly-Lota area along Moreton Bay, where tuckeroo trees (Cupaniopsis anacardioides) are part of the character of the coastal landscape.

I love the way spoonbills look back at you with their funny little binocular eyes — as though they are watching us just as carefully as we are watching them.

Handmade paper leaves form the tuckeroo canopy above the birds, while layers of acrylic, watercolour and paper create the water, sky and surrounding landscape. The handmade leaves echo the familiar foliage of these coastal trees, bringing a little of the place itself into the work. Birds are hand created from paper.

The handmade elements are deliberately tactile and imperfect, adding to the character of the work.

Materials: Mixed media — acrylic, watercolour and handmade paper on canvas
Size: 30 × 30 cm
Frame: Pine
Ready to hang
Certificate of Authenticity included

Caring for your artwork

Keep out of direct sunlight and away from excessive moisture. Dust gently with a soft-bristled brush.

As with all handmade mixed media work, small variations and imperfections are part of the making process. They are part of the character of an individual handmade piece.
