Expansion is an original mixed media artwork inspired by the coastal landscape and waterways of the Moreton Bay region in Queensland, from the series To Bear Witness.
The work brings together several layers of this familiar landscape: paperbark trees and leaves in the foreground, mangroves beyond, water stretching between them, and a deep night sky filled with stars. Small birds move through the landscape beneath a painted moon.
The different layers create a sense of looking through and beyond the immediate landscape — from the textured paperbark trunk and leaves in the foreground, across the mangroves and water, and out towards the night sky.
Handmade paper birds, watercolour-painted leaves and an acrylic moon are layered over a richly textured acrylic background. Scratched and painted marks add movement and detail throughout the surface.
Expansion is about the feeling of a landscape becoming larger the longer you look at it — what first appears close and familiar opening into something much bigger.
Materials: Mixed media — acrylic, watercolour, ink and handmade paper on canvas
Size: 30 × 30 cm
Frame: Pine
Ready to hang
Certificate of Authenticity included
Keep out of direct sunlight and away from excessive moisture. Dust gently with a soft-bristled brush.
As with all handmade mixed media work, small variations and imperfections are part of the making process. They are part of the character of the work and the nature of handmade paper elements.
