Oystercatchers in Mangroves

This artwork is reflective of my time as an environmental scientist. During that time I identified plants by the markings on their leaves. I used the red book also known as ‘Rainforest Trees and Shrubs', a field guide to their identification’. This book taught me so much of what i had learned about native rainforest flora and how to identify those big trees in the rainforest, and their understory through one tiny little leaf. A special tool botanists use to see the tiny markings in leaves is a loupe, a little magnifying glass.

As I learned to draw again this book and permission to use the diagrams by Gwen Harden, has been very helpful. Thank you. The leaves of the mangroves are hand-drawn in this artwork and are a story of my recovery teaching my self to draw lines and outlines again has been part of my greater recovery story and I am grateful to the many plants and the story held in their leaves. I hope you enjoy it.

The story wouldn’t be complete without the addition of the birds, in this case the oystercatchers, a shorebird, that utilise the habitat where they plants are. When my drawing skills came back, they did so with whimsy and usually a little humour. I find these birds, and other birds I draw, have a humorous expression or nature in one way or another.

Keryn Hyslop. Australian nature art, mixed media, whimsy style. Acrylic and paper on birch board. 30cm x 30cm. Handmade paper birds. See notes below.

Our art has handmade paper elements and is part of our mixed media style, such as birds, branches, leaves, flowers, sun, moon and other features. These have discrepancies as part of their nature. Please ensure you are happy with them as there are no refunds or exchanges. We love them as they are and hope you do too. We see them as love of imperfection.
