To Fly is an original mixed media artwork inspired by the black swans of the Moreton Bay coastline around Wynnum, Manly and Lota, Brisbane.
The two swans move through a richly layered landscape of blue, green and gold. The flowing forms behind them are drawn from the waterways of the region, creating a visual connection between the Brisbane River as it makes its way towards Moreton Bay and the coastal waters where these familiar birds can be seen.
The golden light and unexpected pink of the swans are a nod to the extraordinary sunsets along this part of the coast, when the changing light can transform the colours of the water, landscape and birds themselves.
I love the way these two birds seem to hold both stillness and movement within the work — grounded in the water, yet always capable of taking flight.
Handmade paper swans sit over a heavily textured acrylic background. Layers of blue, green and gold have been built up across the canvas, with the flowing forms suggesting seaweed, water, currents and the interconnected waterways of the landscape.
